Improvisionally Cut, Pieced, and Quilted

When I discovered that “Kitchen” was our prompt, I struggled for a bit. At first I thought, “What am I going to do with that?” We eat almost all of our meals at home. I do almost all of the cooking. I truly enjoy making food. Our kitchen is piled high with cookbooks, utensils, and spices.

But our kitchen is small. Besides my bathroom, it is the place in our home that most desperately needs a face lift. We have three teenage boys, and if everyone is in the kitchen at the same time, it is difficult to move. This drives me crazy. I knew I did not want to make a quilt about that.

So I went to my default setting—Chairs. Mid Century Chrome Kitchen Chairs with Vinyl covers in particular.

The 1950s have always seemed so formulaic to me. Ladies in circle skirts vacuuming. Men without facial hair. One little itty bitty TV. (Which is not a bad thing.) Mini Bars. (The same goes here—not a bad thing.)

But not so with these chairs. These chairs are crazy.

These chairs resist conformity. These chairs are beg to be reproduced in fabric.

Then I realized I could showcase some of my vintage fabric collection.

These sorts of prints can be difficult to work with, but the large seat and back of each chair are perfect for hi-lighting these wild prints.

I decided several prints for each chair would be even better. More is more, right?

It felt good to use these prints. AND to add a new chair quilt to my series.
