NONSENSE
Our theme this time is DISUNITY. I decided to merge several ‘orphan’ blocks from my years of teaching traditional piecing classes. The colors clashed. The patterns were varied – bowtie, Christmas, floral, repro, modern. I wanted to make a statement about accepting diversity. Each section is quilted with a different stitching pattern. Once the blocks were together and quilted, I shared it with some neighboring quilt friends, and one of them commented that it didn’t look like my ‘style’.
So I thought some more about disunity and conflict, and began adding small appliques here and there.
I emphasized the spiky points (representing attacks) by painting them with inktense pencils. They seem to be shooting ‘bullets’ – which are thimbles and buttons. In the center are various shields, hoping for protection from the madness.
There are images of distraught people, showing fear and concern, and images of those who are oblivious to the issues of the day.
There are warriors. There is a wall. An angel is flying upside down above it all. None of it makes sense. I added trees made from hot peppers and a fish.
I found it interesting that, even though I was portraying disunity, I was subconsciously thinking about ways to unify the composition. It’s difficult to ignore art principles that have deep roots in our psyche.
Perhaps I need to slash it apart and try to patch it back together.
